Engine Production

Audi Hungaria has been producing engines for the Audi and Volkswagen Group since 1994. The company has since grown to be the world’s largest engine factory. To date, the employees in Győr have produced more than 35 million engines. Nearly 6,000 employees build over 8,800 engines each day for the Volkswagen Group’s 31 production locations.

Of the 1,954,301 engines produced in 2018, 1,443,036 were three- and four-cylinder gasoline or diesel engines. 10,045 five-cylinder gasoline engines as well as 300,720 six-cylinder and 15,977 eight- and ten-cylinder engines, plus 175,070 six-cylinder diesel engines were also produced. 9,453 electric axle drive units were also manufactured in Győr. The range of engines produced in Győr was also extended last year with the series production of three-cylinder engines and four-cylinder diesel engines with newly developed mild-hybrid technology. Audi Hungaria built six different gasoline and three different diesel engine variants in 2018, with power outputs ranging from 63 kW (86 hp) to 470 kW (639 hp).

In 2018, the 2.5-liter TFSI engine produced by Audi in Győr was voted International Engine of the Year in the 2- to 2.5-liter category. The five-cylinder engine has now won the award for the ninth consecutive time. Audi Hungaria also produces completely knocked down (CKD) engines. Production of CKD engines is primarily intended for overseas customers.

Engine production in Győr was expanded in 2018 to include the series production of electric motors. For the production of electric motors, Audi Hungaria installed innovative production equipment and islands within just one year. The departments for the development of electric motors and for production planning cooperated closely with the engine startup center in Győr to develop the required expertise. In parallel to the production facility, Audi Hungaria has set up three test benches for electric motors in the engine/motor development department, for testing and continuous load operation. The employees have undergone further training to become electrical experts in the production technology center for electric motors.
