Audi Hungaria celebrates 10 millionth four-cylinder petrol engine in Győr

Győr, March 11, 2026 – Audi Hungaria has reached a new major milestone: the 10 millionth EA888 R4 Otto 2.0L TFSi four-cylinder engine has been produced at the Győr-based factory. The jubilee engine will be installed in a third-generation Audi Q3 model by the company’s automotive specialists.

“10 million four-cylinder petrol engines produced – this is not just a number, but a testament to the expertise and commitment of the Győr team. We are proud that Audi Hungaria plays a key role in the global powertrain production of the Volkswagen Group,” said Peter Will, Member of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria responsible for powertrain production.

The Győr engine plant started production of this engine type in 2005, and today around 1,100 specialists ensure the continuity of production. Currently, production takes place on more than 30,000 m² on 14 production lines, 12 of which are mechanical machining lines for components, and there is also an assembly shop where the company’s employees assemble the engines. The company boasts a high manufacturing depth, which means that crankcases, cylinder heads, crankshafts, camshafts and cranks are all produced in-house.

The power unit represents technological progress across generations, and – thanks to the manufacturing depth – also stands for high added value and excellent quality. The five generations of the four-cylinder petrol engine family have been in production for 21 years now in 1.8- and 2.0-liter versions with power outputs ranging from 110 to 245 kW. As of now, the 2.0-liter aggregates of the third, fourth and fifth generations are being produced on the production lines. The engines manufactured in Győr cover more than 120 engine variants, which are also used in several brands of the Volkswagen Group: from Europe to Mexico, India, South Africa and China, the engines will be installed at various Audi and VW Group factories, in models of the Audi, Volkswagen, ŠKODA, Porsche and CUPRA brands, including Porsche Macan, ŠKODA Octavia, VW Golf and the models manufactured in Győr, the Audi Q3 and the CUPRA Terramar.

Developed over several generations, the four-cylinder petrol engine is one of the Volkswagen Group’s best-known and most widely series-produced power units, thanks to its constantly evolving technology, efficiency and reliability. The contribution of the expert team in Győr is crucial to the success of the engine in many markets. To give you an idea of the scale: the weight of ten million engines roughly equals 150 times the weight of the Eiffel Tower – a figure that illustrates the size and importance of engine production in Győr.

The engine factory is still a key pillar of Audi Hungaria, providing efficient powertrains to 35 VW Group production sites worldwide and thus playing a key role in the global value chain of the European car manufacturer.

With more than 33 years of experience in powertrain manufacturing, Audi Hungaria is one of the Group’s most important competence centers. In addition to production, the company is also engaged in significant research and development activities and operates a Group-wide service center (SCC) in Győr.

The company operates a broad product portfolio tailored to customer needs and will further strengthen its production focus in the future by manufacturing a new generation of electric drives. The parallel production of internal combustion and electric drives provides the company with a solid foundation in a rapidly changing market environment.
