At the heart of the new RS 5's powertrain is a combination of a V6 bi-turbo engine and an electric motor. The plug-in hybrid system ushers in a new era in Audi Sport's history, while retaining the character that fans of RS models have come to expect.
According to project coordinator Zoltán Richárd Májer, what made this development unique was that the engine development teams from Győr and Neckarsulm worked together under a unique collaboration model. During the so-called "joint development" initiative launched in 2021, engineers from the two manufacturing units worked in pairs to develop individual engine components.
"My responsibilities included developing the cooperative development model, designing the cooling system of the new engine, and coordinating the strength testing of certain engine components. Later, during my one-and-a-half-year assignment in Neckarsulm, I was responsible for coordinating the entire development team."
The result is an engine that, with new turbo technology, integrated charge air cooling, and improved thermal management, delivers outstanding performance, quick response, and high efficiency all at once. The 2.9-liter V6 engine alone delivers 510 HP and 600 Nm of torque, and when combined with the plug-in hybrid system, drivers have 639 HP and 825 Nm at their disposal. The RS 5 is Audi Sport’s first plug-in hybrid RS model, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the brand’s history, as it preserves the character of RS models while incorporating the benefits of electrification.
For Zoltán Richárd Májer, however, it is not just the technical achievements that represent the project’s greatest success.
"What I'm most proud of is that we've proven the Győr team can hold its own even in such an international development environment. This project has given all of us so much, both professionally and personally," he says.
Where Precision Takes Shape
Development is followed by production. This is where the experts at the Győr engine plant take over, including László Dávid Budai, who has been working in our company’s engine production for exactly 20 years, and Dávid Fekete, who put on the red Audi jacket seven years ago. His journey to Győr began very far away, as he is originally from Ukraine, and he has a special personal connection to the RS 5.
"When I was a kid, my dad gave me my first Matchbox car – an Audi TT – and that was the first car brand whose name I learned. It's a fantastic feeling to be building engines for such special cars here at Audi Hungaria today. My family is also extremely proud of me – especially my grandmother, whom I rarely get to see."
Production of this high-performance petrol engine, which represents the latest in cutting-edge technology, began in the spring of 2026. Known in full as the V6 Otto EVO LK3, it is the company’s most powerful petrol engine within its already extensive lineup of engines.
For our assembly shop employees, the manufacturing processes for the new engine were, of course, familiar in their basic aspects, but the numerous technical innovations – including nearly 60 new parts and new assembly steps – brought variety and new learning opportunities to their work, which they perform with the same clockwork precision as the engine that powers the RS5 sports car.
"Every detail matters in the engine assembly shop." In the case of an Audi Sport model, particular emphasis is placed on joints, gaskets, tightening torques, and rigorous inspection processes. High performance can only be achieved through uncompromising quality," says László.
They are both proud that their work is helping to further enhance the reputation of the Győr engine plant around the world.
To anyone getting behind the wheel of an RS 5 with an engine built in Győr for the first time, we can only say that they have made a great choice. They should enjoy the drive – after all, that's why this car was built.
Design Brought to Life
While the engine is being built, another team in Győr is helping to create the body parts.
The high-precision press tools used to shape the doors, side walls, and fenders of the RS 5 are manufactured at the Audi Hungaria Tool Shop. Although these tools are invisible to customers, they are nonetheless an indispensable part of the car manufacturing process.
According to Project Manager József Sáfián, participating in the production of such an iconic Audi Sport model is not only a mark of professional recognition but also clear evidence that the Audi Group has confidence in the Győr-based company’s capabilities.
"The new RS 5 project is a particularly important milestone, as the RS models are the most advanced in Audi’s product lineup, where the technology of progress truly comes to life."
József joined Audi Hungaria in 2010 with a degree in economics. He began his career in finance and has been working at the Tool Shop since January 2017. Here, it truly becomes clear every day that transforming a flat sheet of metal into a sporty-looking part is no ordinary task.
As a project manager, he is responsible for the tool from the design phase through to its handover for series production. The role is multifaceted, operating at the intersection of production, workshop operations, and management tasks, involving coordination with many people and a strong emphasis on teamwork. Optimal technical solutions are often the result of lengthy analysis and preparatory phases. József proudly highlights the engineering expertise of the toolmaking team – the professional toolmakers and machining specialists – and expresses his appreciation for their perseverance and dedication.
"The greatest technical challenge was posed by the first fender tool, which consists of six operations, each weighing nearly 30 metric tons, and whose manufacturing requires a high degree of precision across multiple optimization cycles, resulting in a component with accuracy within one-tenth of a millimetre that fits perfectly with the other elements and whose surface also meets strict quality assurance standards.”
József Sáfián now smiles as he recalls critical situations in which an unexpected challenge disrupted the schedule – which had been planned several weeks in advance – just before an important production phase.
"In situations like this, the team gets together right away, and everyone works to find a solution. The bond we've formed and the trust we have in one another are invaluable; it goes without saying that we help each other whenever we can." József believes that all of these are essential prerequisites for ensuring that the tools needed to manufacture the complex body parts with the sporty geometry characteristic of RS models are produced to the appropriate quality standards.
That Certain Excellence
The new Audi RS 5 is much more than just a high-performance sports car. It is a project that showcases key elements of the Győr-based company’s value chain: from the ideas of the development engineers, through the precision work carried out in the engine assembly, all the way to the press tools and body parts that define the car’s distinctive design.
This collaboration demonstrates that Audi Hungaria is not merely a manufacturing facility, but a competence centre where engineering expertise, manufacturing excellence, and decades of experience come together to shape the Audi models of the future. The Audi RS 5 is yet another spectacular proof of this.
