AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft has launched the second phase of its forestry project. Dr. Endre Kardeván, Under Secretary for the Ministry of Rural Development, Zsolt Borkai, Mayor of the City of Győr, Achim Heinfling, Audi Hungaria CEO in charge of production and representatives of universities and authorities participating in the project, today symbolically planted the first oak saplings.

On the initiative of Audi Hungaria and Audi AG, 16,000 oak saplings will be planted on around ten acres of Tarjánpuszta hill-country, located 25 kilometres from Győr. Sponsorship of this new territory, which is maintained by Kisalföldi Forestry Company, will be taken on by Audi Hungaria for the next 100 years. The company is contributing 16 million Hungarian forints to the planting and maintenance of the forested area, and hence to scientific research carried out in the field of climate protection and biodiversity.

“In terms of sustainability, our primary goal is reduction of the environmental load. We wish to contribute to leaving behind a liveable world for the next generation” – stated Achim Heinfling, Audi Hungaria CEO in charge of production. “This tree planting project is further proof of our social responsibility and our commitment to environmental protection.”

In the second phase of the forestry scheme, the company is continuing to cooperate with the Technical University of Munich, the University of Western Hungary and Kisalföldi Forestry Company. The first phase of the forestry scheme was launched in November of 2009, when 13,000 pedunculate oaks were planted close to Győr.

With its tree planting the company is backing various research projects, which besides investigating the living conditions of the trees, are also examining their carbon-dioxide binding properties and the effect they have on biological diversity. The research results concerning growth rates, climate, fertility and biodiversity are serving the interests of science.

On the initiative of Audi AG, the project “Oak woods for absorbing carbon-dioxide” was launched in the autumn of 2009. Under the direction of the Department of Sylviculture at the Technical University of Munich, 36,000 oaks were planted by Audi at that time using a precisely defined experimental method. The project has since been extended to other international sites, so that the results of research carried out under varying climatic conditions may be linked. 10,000 pedunculate oaks have been planted in the vicinity of Neckarsulm. A member of the company group, Automobili Lamborghini is also participating in the project, and will soon plant 10,000 saplings on an area of seventeen acres in Sant’Agata Bolognese.

Since its foundation in 1993, Audi Hungaria has taken on responsibility for environmental protection. The successfulness of our environmental management system is indicated by numerous prizes and awards, for instance the EMAS and ÖKO-Profit prizes. The company also organised tree planting on its factory site in 2010, during which 160 deciduous and coniferous trees were planted. The Pronouncement on Environmental Protection by Audi Hungaria won the “Green Frog Prize” for the third time in 2010.
